About

The American Wirehair tends to be a calm and tolerant cat who takes life as it comes. His favorite hobby is bird-watching from a sunny windowsill, and his hunting ability will stand you in good stead if insects enter the house.

🏛️ Breed History

The American Wirehair is a charming and unique breed of domestic cat that hails from the picturesque landscapes of upstate New York. Its story began in 1966 when a delightful surprise emerged from a litter of barn cats in the town of Vernon. Among the five kittens was a striking red-and-white male, who sported a distinctive wiry coat and quirky crinkly whiskers, all thanks to a spontaneous genetic mutation. This little furball, affectionately named Council Rock Farms Adams of Hi-Fi, or "Adam" for short, kicked off an entirely new chapter in feline history. What makes the American Wirehair particularly fascinating is that its wiry fur is not a result of the same genetic mutation found in other curly-coated breeds, such as the Cornish Rex or Devon Rex, giving it a unique place in the cat world. As the breed began to flourish, Adam’s owner enlisted the help of local breeder Joan O'Shea to develop a breeding program. Together, they produced adorable wirehaired kittens, which quickly captured the hearts of cat enthusiasts. The breed gained popularity, leading to its recognition by the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1967 and its acceptance for championship competition in 1978. Today, while the American Wirehair is celebrated for its playful and affectionate nature, it remains one of the rarest breeds within the CFA framework. Its unique lineage and delightful personality have not only made it a beloved companion but also a cherished part of cat fancier communities, particularly in North America and even extending to fans in Canada and Germany. However, this enchanting breed has yet to make its mark in countries like Britain and Australia, leaving a little mystery for cat lovers around the globe.
