🏛️ Breed History

The Kintamani, also affectionately known as the Kintamani-Bali Dog, is a delightful breed that hails from the enchanting Indonesian island of Bali, specifically the Kintamani region. This breed stands out not only for its striking appearance but also for its rich history. The Kintamani has developed from the free-roaming local street dogs that have inhabited the island for thousands of years. In fact, the ancestors of these dogs arrived on Bali around 3,000 years ago, creating a unique lineage that has adapted beautifully to the island's environment. Officially recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale in 2019, the Kintamani is celebrated as Bali’s only official dog breed. What makes the Kintamani truly special is its deep connection to the local culture and community. Over nearly a century, following a rabies-control measure that restricted the entry of foreign dogs to the island in 1926, the Kintamani has thrived within its own distinct gene pool. This has allowed the breed to develop characteristics that are uniquely suited to Balinese life. Their genetic ties to local island dogs link them to fascinating relatives like the Australian dingo and the New Guinea singing dog, showcasing their ancient roots. With their warm demeanor and adaptability, Kintamanis are not just companions; they embody the spirit of Bali itself, making them cherished members of many families on the island. Whether keeping watch over rice fields or lounging in the sun, these dogs are a true testament to Bali’s rich heritage and vibrant culture.
