About
The Chartreux is generally silent but communicative. Short play sessions, mixed with naps and meals are their perfect day. Whilst appreciating any attention you give them, they are not demanding, content instead to follow you around devotedly, sleep on your bed and snuggle with you if you’re not feeling well.
🏛️ Breed History
The Chartreux is a charming and rare breed of cat that hails from the picturesque landscapes of France. With their impressive, muscular build, often described as cobby, these felines are not just beautiful but also agile hunters, revered by farmers for their exceptional skills in keeping rodent populations at bay. Their signature feature is their stunning blue-grey, water-resistant coats that have a unique, slightly thick texture, reminiscent of sheepskin. Adding to their appeal, Chartreux cats are known for their captivating orange or copper eyes and a delightful “smile” that comes from their distinctive head structure and tapered muzzles. The history of the Chartreux is as rich as its character. First mentioned in the mid-16th century by poet Joachim du Bellay, these cats have been part of French culture for centuries, embodying both elegance and charm. An interesting quirk of the breed is the naming convention that reflects their birth year; each Chartreux born in a given year has an official name that starts with the same letter, cycling through the alphabet while skipping certain letters. For example, a Chartreux born in 2021 would have an official name beginning with an 'S.' This tradition not only honors their lineage but also adds a touch of whimsy to their identity. With such a fascinating history and a personality to match, the Chartreux continues to capture the hearts of cat lovers around the world.
