🏛️ Breed History
The Kars Shepherd, or Kars Çoban Köpeği, is a remarkable breed hailing from the picturesque town of Kars in Eastern Turkey. Renowned for its role as a livestock guardian, this breed is part of a proud tradition that includes other notable Turkish breeds like the Akbash and Kangal. The Kars Shepherd has long been cherished by farmers and shepherds in the provinces of Ardahan, Artvin, Erzurum, and Iğdır, where its natural instincts and protective nature shine. These dogs are not just guardians; they are loyal companions who form strong bonds with their human families and the livestock they protect. With a history steeped in the rugged landscapes of Eastern Anatolia, the Kars Shepherd is well-adapted to its environment, boasting a powerful physique and a thick coat that provides protection against harsh weather. Their intelligence and independence make them excellent guardians, capable of assessing threats and acting accordingly. The breed's first scientific description was presented in 1996, marking a significant moment in recognizing their unique qualities and contributions to the region’s agricultural lifestyle. Today, the Kars Shepherd continues to embody the spirit of its homeland, valued not only for its abilities but also for its unwavering loyalty and gentle demeanor, making it a treasured member of any family fortunate enough to welcome one into their home.
